Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area and Comcast NBCUniversal Bay Area Family Raise Over 1.3 Million Airline Miles to Fulfill Wish Kids Travel

San Jose (July 1, 2019) – NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 Área de la Bahía viewers answered the call to donate their unused airline miles to help send children with critical illnesses on wish trips. The stations teamed up with Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, NBC Sports Bay Area, NBC Sports California, Comcast and Comcast Spotlight for a one-day “Wish-A-Thon for Miles” on Tuesday, June 25, raising over 1.3 million airline miles to help wish kids and their families take flight.

The one-day telethon and online fundraiser ran from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 aired live updates in both English and Spanish throughout the day asking viewers to donate their unused airline miles.

“Air travel is our organization’s biggest wish granting expense, and these miles are going to go a long way toward giving wish kids the trips of their dreams,” says Betsy Biern, CEO of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area. “I’m so grateful to everyone who donated during our Wish-A-Thon and to Comcast and their networks for making the day possible.”

“We are so proud to be able to support Make-A-Wish and we thank our viewers for their generosity and helping transform the lives of children in some unthinkable circumstances,” said Stacy Owen, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48. “We thank our Comcast and NBC Sports Bay Area family for joining us in this united effort, and we hope to continue to see the donations come in!”

Although the one-day fundraiser has ended, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area needs ongoing donations to reach the 44 million airline miles that are needed annually in the Greater Bay Area to be able to fulfill wish trips. Every traveler with airline miles can be part of a life-affirming wish; all it takes is a simple donation of miles from Delta, United, Alaska, Jet Blue, Southwest or American Airlines.
