SAN JOSE, CA– (September 8, 2020) – NBC Bay Area / KNTV and Telemundo 48 Area de la Bahia / KSTS today announced that more than 1,900 pets were adopted from Bay Area shelters/rescues and more than $56,000 was raised in donations during its month-long Clear The Shelters™ 2020 pet adoption campaign. Across the country, more than 130,000 pets found new homes. To help individuals and communities continue to practice safe social distancing measures, this year’s initiative took place from August 1 through August 31 and featured virtual pet adoptions. The campaign also made it easy for people to donate online to participating shelters/rescues. The national fundraising campaign resulted in more than $1.185 million in donations to benefit participating shelters/rescues. This is the sixth consecutive year that NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 present their popular pet adoption campaign to local communities in partnership with area shelters/rescues. Since 2015, NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ Clear The Shelters campaign has helped more than half a million pets find new homes.

“Our Clear The Shelters event looked a little different this year but was still a great success with a record number of monetary donations,” said Stacy Owen, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48. “Even after our month-long event, shelters across the Bay Area still need our help, whether it’s fostering a pet, donations, or giving a pet a forever home.”

The pandemic required local shelters to get creative in finding forever homes for their pets this year, at the Humane Society Silicon Valley in Milpitas, Clear The Shelters went digital giving adopters a chance to meet adoptable pets via zoom. In Berkeley at the only in-person, socially distanced approved event at Berkeley Humane Animal Shelter, people lined up early around the block for a chance to adopt a furry friend. Berkeley Humane also hosted a drive-up vaccination clinic to help families who have been unable to get vaccinations for their pets during the pandemic.

This year’s Clear The Shelters’ “Adopt & Donate” campaign featured returning partners WeRescueand, and new partner 24PetWatch. The WeRescue iOS app and 24PetWatch’s free website helped individuals adopt pets virtually while’s Clear The Shelters donation site provided a way for people to donate to participating shelters/rescues to support their important work for pets.
