MSNBC Draws 5M Total Viewers During Dayside, Grows By Triple Digits Over Previous Highest Inauguration in 2009 with 3M More Viewers
MSNBC Delivers a Record Lead Over FOX News, Topping FOX News Every Hour Between 6am and 2am in Both Total Viewers and A25-54
NEW YORK (January 21, 2021) – MSNBC’s special coverage of the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on January 20, 2021 delivered MSNBC’s highest-rated dayside (9am-4pm) ever, drawing a record-shattering 5M total viewers and 1.2M A25-54 viewers, according to Nielsen. The 2021 inauguration topped MSNBC’s previous record of 2.0M total viewers during the January 20, 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden (up +147% from 2009 in dayside). In A25-54, the 2021 inauguration topped MSNBC’s previous record of 716K viewers during the 2009 inauguration (up +65% from 2009 in dayside). Outside of the inauguration, 1/20 dayside topped MSNBC’s highest dayside delivery in total viewers (3.6M on 1/6/21) and A25-54 (878K on 10/8/01).
During prime (8pm-11pm), MSNBC delivered 4.34M total viewers, a gain of nearly 2 million viewers or +86% increase compared to inauguration day 2009. In A25-54, MSNBC posted 1.61K viewers, a gain of nearly 300K viewers or +30% increase compared to 2009.
MSNBC dominated FOX News during the key dayparts of dayside (9am-4pm), prime (8pm-11pm) and total day (6am-6am) in both total viewers and A25-54. MSNBC’s special inauguration coverage (9am-4pm) scored 5M total viewers, dominating FOX News every hour in both total viewers and A25-54. In addition, MSNBC topped FOX News every hour between 6am and 2am and delivered a record lead in the full day daypart (6am-2am) with 3.9M total viewers (vs. FOX News’ 2.1M) and 934K A25-54 (vs. FOX News’ 447K).
MSNBC prime (8-11p) scored 4.34M total viewers (vs. FOX News’ 3.1M) – a 1.2M lead over FOX News. In A25-54, prime drew 1.16M viewers (vs. FOX’s 573K).
