MSNBC Digital Saw 46M Video Starts, Viewers Watched for 1.5 Hours on Average

NEW YORK (February 17, 2021) – MSNBC was the #1 network across all of cable during the entirety of the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump (2/9/21-2/13/21), according to Nielsen. Viewers turned to MSNBC in large numbers for special coverage and analysis with 2.4M total viewers tuning in for the entirety of the trial (6am-2am Tues-Sat), easily topping FOX News (1.6M) and CNN (2M) in total viewers.

During the height of the trial from 12pm-8pm, MSNBC averaged 3.1M total viewers (2/9/21-2/13/21) – finishing ahead of all cable networks (#2 CNN 2.9M and #3 FOX News 1.8M). Across all broadcast networks, MSNBC finished #1 all five days last week during daytime coverage (12pm-5pm), besting CNN, FOX News, CBS and ABC.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” dominated all of cable as the #1 cable program in total viewers for the week (2/8/21-2/12/21) with 4.1M total viewers (vs. FOX News’ 2.9M and CNN’s 2.6M). Friday (2/12) marked the 28th straight day that “Maddow” beat CNN and FOX News. For the week of 2/8, “Maddow” drew 719K A25-54 viewers (vs. FOX News’ 423K and CNN’s 625K). “Maddow” was the #1 cable show all five days last week.

“Morning Joe” was the #1 morning program in both total viewers and A25-54 in the time period for the week (2/8/21-2/12/21). “Morning Joe” posted 1.4M total viewers (vs. FOX News’ 1.1M and CNN’s 802K) and 229K A25-54 viewers (vs. FOX News’ 179K and CNN’s 199K). “Morning Joe” has topped FOX News and CNN for 30 days straight in total viewers.

Compared to the first Senate impeachment trial of Donald Trump (1/21/20-2/3/20), MSNBC’s viewership was up by triple digits (+119%) in dayside (12pm-8pm) among total viewers.

For the final closing arguments and vote on Saturday 2/13 (12pm-5pm), MSNBC was #1, drawing 3.5M total viewers (vs. CNN’s 3.4M and FOX News’ 1.8M).

Year to-date, MSNBC reigns #1 across all cable TV in prime (M-Su 8pm-11pm) among total viewers (ahead of #2 FOX News, #3 CNN and #4 ESPN).

MSNBC Digital saw nearly 46 million video starts across platforms for the length of the trial, with MSNBC livestream viewers watching for an average of more than an hour and a half.
