NBC BAY AREA, TELEMUNDO 48 AND COMCAST NBCUNIVERSAL FOUNDATION AWARD GRANTS TO NON-PROFIT PROGRAMS CREATING POSITIVE CHANGES IN BAY AREA COMMUNITIES

$225,000 in grant funding dedicated to organizations that are helping communities impacted by the coronavirus crisis

San Jose, CA – (May 13, 2020) – NBC Bay Area / KNTV and Telemundo 48 Area de la Bahia / KSTS and the Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation today announced a total of $225,000 in Project Innovations grants will be presented to eight organizations that are using innovation to tackle everyday problems and urgent COVID-19 needs in the community. The non-profit organizations selected as Project Innovation 2020 grant recipients all exhibited flexibility with their programming and will use their funding to deliver services and programs that address the needs of those impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

This year, a total of $2.475 million in Project Innovation grants have been awarded to not-profit organizations in 11 markets, including the Bay Area.

“At NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48, our mission is to use the power of journalism to inspire action,” said Stacy Owen, President and General Manager of NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48. “The recipients of this year’s Project Innovation grants embody that spirit, swiftly adjusting priorities and resources to meet our communities’ most critical needs.”

Local Project Innovation 2020 grant recipients include:

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley – $50,000 Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties' mission is to lead their community to ensure that anyone who needs a healthy meal can get one.

Oakland Promise - $35,000 Oakland Promise seeks to ensure that every Oakland child graduates high school with the expectations, resources, and skills to complete college and be successful in the career of their choice.

Hunger at Home - $35,000 Hunger at Home serves as a conduit between the business community and nonprofit partners by which excess food and other surplus is channeled to the homeless and the hungry.

Asian Health Services – $30,000 Asian Health Services' mission is to serve and advocate for the medically underserved, including the immigrant and refugee Asian and Pacific Islander community, and to ensure equal access to health care services regardless of income, insurance status, language, or culture.

Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin – $25,000 Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin advances nonprofits and volunteerism by strengthening leadership, encouraging innovation and empowering individuals in our community.

Pacific Community Ventures – $25,000 Pacific Community Ventures' mission is to invest in small businesses, create good jobs, and make markets work for social good. In California, they offer an integrated small business lending model combining fair loans, pro bono mentoring, and incentives to create quality jobs.

Southern Alameda County Comite For Raza Mental Health – $15,000 Southern Alameda County Comite for Raza Mental Health, also known as La Familia, provides underserved multicultural communities with the tools and support necessary to build resilience, wellness, and economic power. They provide culturally, racially, and linguistically responsive mental health and social services, with an emphasis on serving low-income, communities of color who face significant barriers to accessing quality healthcare, affordable housing, and wellness services.

Pacific Autism Center of Education - $10,000 Pacific Autism Center of Education's mission is to enhance the lives of people impacted by autism, through innovation, exceptional education and compassionate care.

Project Innovation applications opened on January 11 and closed on February 15. The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation and NBC/Telemundo owned stations reviewed applications virtually beginning March 2020. Applications were evaluated to determine groups’ ability to advance their communities in the areas of storytelling, community engagement, culture of inclusion and youth education, as well as their preparedness and capacity to deliver quality programming that meets the pressing needs that have developed in their communities during this unprecedented time.

Project Innovation 2020 grants were presented to eligible non-profit organizations in select markets including New York (WNBC, WNJU), Southern California (KNBC, KVEA), Chicago (WMAQ, WSNS), Philadelphia (WCAU, WWSI), Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS, KXTX), Boston (WBTS, WNEU, NECN), Hartford, CT (WVIT, WRDM), Washington, D.C. (WRC-TV, WZDC), Miami-Fort Lauderdale (WTVJ, WSCV), San Francisco Bay Area (KNTV, KSTS), and San Diego (KNSD, KUAN).
