NBC BAY AREA WINS 2019 ALFRED I. DUPONT AWARD FOR INVESTIGATION INTO AC TRANSIT

The stations Investigative Unit is honored with prestigious award for second consecutive year

SAN JOSE, CA – (December 11, 2018) – NBC Bay Area / KNTV is the recipient of a prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for its investigative series, “Drivers Under Siege.” KNTV’s investigation into the dangerous working conditions faced by Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District bus drivers found that AC Transit drivers faced more violent assaults than any other district in the Bay Area. The station’s investigative report led to tangible changes at the agency adding safety measures to protect drivers. The duPont-Columbia awards honor the best in broadcast, documentary, and online reporting. This year, the awards recognize just 16 news stories from a pool of hundreds of entries. News outlets were selected based on the strength of their reporting and ability to produce stories that create an impact in the public interest.

“Our Investigative Unit reviewed more than 200 bus surveillance videos which showed AC Transit drivers being attacked at a rate much higher than the public or even the agency knew about,” said Stephanie Adrouny, Vice President of News for NBC Bay Area. “These attacks are not only putting the lives of drivers at risk, but riders as well. We’re glad our investigative series is prompting lawmakers to take action to protect our public safety.”

As a result of the investigation, which was recognized with a Society of Professional Journalists award earlier in 2018, AC Transit installed new bus shields to protect drivers. In addition, California federal lawmakers introduced a bill in Congress requiring transit districts across the country to reassess their safety measures. “The Drivers Under Siege investigative series is another powerful example of the important role of investigative journalism in our communities,” added Stacy Owen, President and General Manager for NBC Bay Area. “We’re honored to have been recognized with this prestigious award for our Investigative Unit’s work that spanned two years and resulted in bringing important issues to light and inspiring change. We will continue our commitment to shedding a light on questionable practices on behalf of the communities our station serves.”

KNTV’s series of reports was led by Senior Investigative Reporter Vicky Nguyen and Producer Kevin Nious. Stephanie Adrouny and Bob Goldberger served as executive producers.
