NBC10, TELEMUNDO62 AND NBCUNIVERSAL FOUNDATION AWARD $225K TO LOCAL NON-PROFITS IN SECOND ANNUAL ‘PROJECT INNOVATION’ GRANT CHALLENGE

PHILADELPHIA (May 20, 2019) - NBC10/WCAU, Telemundo62/WWSI, and the NBCUniversal Foundation today announced the six local non-profit winners receiving a total of $225,000 in grants as part of the second annual ‘Project Innovation’ grant challenge. The winning organizations were selected based on their program’s approach to addressing community issues with innovative solutions in the areas of community engagement, diversity/inclusion, media/storytelling, and youth education.

“We are honored to provide six local non-profit organizations with grants that will propel their communities into a better tomorrow,” said Ric Harris, President and General Manager of NBC10 and Telemundo62. “The Project Innovation grant challenge is designed to help local organizations across the Greater Philadelphia region address the specific needs of our communities through funding innovative and impactful programs.”

Presented in 11 markets throughout the country, including Greater Philadelphia, Project Innovation is offered by the NBCUniversal Foundation and NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal. This year, nearly $2.5 million in Project Innovation grants will be given to eligible non-profits across the country that are using innovative programming to inspire community solutions, bringing Project Innovations impact to nearly $5 million since its inception in 2018.

Local Project Innovation 2019 grant recipients include:

‘A New View’ is a project aiming to transform vacant lots in Camden, New Jersey that are currently used for illegal dumping into works of art. By implementing dynamic installations, eye-catching artwork, and community programming, ‘A New View’ hopes to change the negative perception of a city whose renaissance is underway. Turning these illegal dumping areas into works of art aim to strengthen community pride by allowing people to take part in the beautification of their neighborhoods. Curated national artists will be connected with local artists to tell a story of Camden’s resurgence through several mediums, including found art, highlighting what treasures a perceived pile of trash can produce.

The Underserved Education Initiative provides quality science and nature education to teachers, students and community organizations in economically disadvantaged areas. The program fosters science literacy and reinforces classroom lessons by providing students with fun, interactive and inquiry-based science education programs. The Underserved Education Initiative also expands natural science professional development courses for educators, helping strengthen teacher’s science education curriculum for their students.

Designing Your Future is an 8-week, accelerated job readiness program that offers a series of interactive workshops, career coaching and one-on-one mentoring to women entering or reentering the workforce. Dress for Success Central New Jersey recruits community business professionals as client mentors who assist with resume writing, interview skills, job search and provide moral support, leading to higher success among attendees in achieving employment.

The Medical-Legal Partnership Program employs an innovative, preventative approach to achieve equitable health outcomes for low-income persons with disabilities. By integrating legal services into healthcare settings, Legal Clinic for the Disabled (LCD) can reach clients in an environment that is convenient for them without having to travel to multiple offices to the receive all of the services they need. This unique service model allows LCD to effectively and efficiently impact a greater number of low-income persons with disabilities in need of legal services – meeting them upstream before there is a crisis.

The Mouthful Podcast is a hybrid of theater, journalism and digital media. The podcast uses student-written monologues developed as part of the organization’s annual Monologue Festival as the starting point for larger conversations about social and cultural topics. Each episode features a performance of the monologue by a professional actor, an interview with its writer, and community conversations with anyone from the area that can elaborate on the topic. This work serves as a vehicle for Philadelphia area youth to therapeutically create and communicate with their peers and act as citizen-artists fostering new visions of justice and equity.

The WHYY Media Labs program provides schools with the equipment and knowledge needed to integrate digital media making into students’ learning and community life. The program fosters media literacy, academic engagement, 21st Century skills and youth voices to create pathways to careers for the most engaged students. WHYY provides the Media Labs program directly to students and teachers in their schools, allowing them to engage in hands-on, creative assignments incorporated into their class curriculum without the obstacle of leaving their school to attend an after-school program.
