MIAMI – September 15, 2020 –Telemundo, the leading media company serving Hispanics in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, kicks-off Hispanic Heritage Month with the launch of Nuestras Voces Cuentan (Our Voices Matter), a multiplatform celebratory campaign under the banner of its award-winning corporate social responsibility initiative, “El Poder En Ti” (The Power in You). The month-long initiative will recognize and highlight the culture, spirit, triumphs, and extraordinary contributions of the more than 60 million Latinos living in the U.S. at a time when their presence and influence is increasingly shaping the economic, cultural and political future of America.

Nuestras Voces Cuentan, showcases a set of original paintings by talented Hispanic artists residing in Houston, Los Angeles, and the greater New York/tri-state area. The selected artists were asked to represent the power of the Latino community in each of their works and to encourage Latinos to engage in the upcoming 2020 election, while honoring family values and Latino culture, as well as the accomplishments of women, health professionals, athletes, farm workers and young entrepreneurs, among others. In line with health and safety protocols during the pandemic, each 6-foot long canvas was painted in the respective artist’s studio and will be put on display at Telemundo Center —the Network’s state-of-the-art global headquarters in Miami, Florida. Following are the selected artists:

  • Alex “Ali” Gonzalez (Los Angeles) - Alex ‘Ali’ Gonzalez was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA in 1988. He began his artistic career at a young age in the graffiti scene. Gonzalez is widely known for his mural work around LA. He graduated from painting small canvases to selling collectible custom spray cans of his art and is now in high demand for personal commissioned portraits.
  • Layqa Nuna Yawar (New Jersey) - Layqa Nuna Yawar was born in Cuenca, Ecuador and lives in Newark, New Jersey. He makes art on paper and canvas as well as installations and large-scale murals rooted in a socially engaged process. His work examines the power that public and representational art have in challenging injustice, racism and xenophobia. Yawar’s work is informed by his life and experiences being a colonized mixed-blood immigrant to the U.S. and all the complexity that this carries.
  • Sylvia Blanco (Houston) - Sylvia Blanco is a Houston-based artist who was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She was always curious about art but never pursued it growing up. In 2010 she found her passion for painting by accident, when a coworker gave her a painting set. Blanco has an enthusiastic eye for detail and has found purpose and fulfillment in every painting she works on. She dedicated time to learn techniques and grow as an artist and it did not take long for her to make the decision to pursue art as a full-time career.

"The strength of Latinos continues to grow as – for the first time – they are the largest ethnic minority group eligible to vote in November," said Senior Vice President of Corporate and External Affairs Christina Kolbjornsen. "This Hispanic Heritage Month, Telemundo is honoring those who have paved the way while continuing to ensure Latino voices are heard and counted, especially as they take part in a historic presidential election.”

Using the hashtag #NuestrasVocesCuentan and #UsaTuVoz, Telemundo will encourage viewers and the Latino community to share their version of a painting to expand the conversation on what it means to be a Latino in the U.S.

In addition, Telemundo will be donating $10,000 each to three non-profit organizations located in each of the artists’ cities. The donations will help the organizations’ local COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts. The non-profit partners include:

  • CIELO (Comunidades Indigenas en Liderazgo), Los Angeles: a non-profit that has set up a fund to support undocumented indigenous people who make up most of the city's service sector workers and who have disproportionately been impacted by the pandemic.
  • La Casa de Don Pedro, Newark: A 48-year-old community-based, grassroots organization committed to empowering Greater Newark, NJ’s marginalized communities and advocating for self-sufficiency and empowerment.
  • MECA Houston, Houston: a community-based non-profit committed to the healthy development of underserved youth and adults through arts and cultural programming.

Network Integration and Special Programming:
The campaign will include a series of custom on-air public service announcements featuring the selected artists, with voice overs from prominent journalists from the Network including: Felicidad Aveleyra, Julio Vaqueiro, and Vanessa Hauc. It will also feature weekly in-show segments across network shows and daily digital and social content highlighting the many contributions of Hispanics in the U.S. Telemundo talent will share testimonials about their Latino experience and encourage viewers to share theirs on Telemundo’s El Poder En Ti social media platforms.
