Leon Panetta: “I'd walk into the Oval Office by myself and look around and say, ‘I am at the center of power. Not just for this country but the world.’”
June 3, 2020 – This week, MSNBC launched season three of The Oath with Chuck Rosenberg – a weekly, original podcast hosted by Chuck Rosenberg – MSNBC legal analyst and former US Attorney and federal prosecutor, senior FBI official and acting head of the DEA. The show is a series of revealing conversations with fascinating men and women who took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. The podcast debuted at #1 on Apple’s podcast charts when it launched last year and has currently been downloaded more than 6 million times.
This season, The Oath broadens its guestlist to include military, intelligence community and law enforcement leaders, a doctor, an astronaut, a judge and more. Interviews include Leon Panetta (former Secretary of Defense, White House Chief of Staff and Director of the CIA), Kathy Sullivan (first American woman to walk in space), Amy Hess (highest ranking woman in FBI history), Vivek Murthy (former Surgeon General), Jim Miller (former Undersecretary of Defense), Fiona Hill (former National Security Council and National Intelligence Council staffer), Carol Lam (former state judge and United States Attorney) and Maya Wiley (civil rights activist and MSNBC Legal Analyst).
The eye-opening conversations explore what shaped these leaders, what drew them to their work, how they overcame adversity and failure and reveal some never-before-heard stories. The captivating discussions exemplify what is best about America – integrity, civility, service and collective responsibility. Each episode is intimate and provocative, with a healthy dose of humility and humor mixed in.
In this week’s episode, guest Leon Panetta discusses the grave responsibility of signing deployment orders as Secretary of Defense, that put young men and women in the military in harm’s way, and what it was like working at the CIA post 9/11. Mr. Panetta also shares observations about being “at the center of power” while working as White House Chief of Staff.
